Multifunctional Screw Compressor Rotors

چکیده
For many years the authors have been investigating the use of twin screw machines to fulfil both the expansion and compression. One of potential advantages of screw machines over other types of positive displacement machine is their ability to perform both the compression and expansion functions simultaneously, using only one pair of rotors. A further feature is the use of the rotors which seal on both contacting surfaces so that the same profile may be used both for the expander and the compressor sections. By using the same profile for both, the compressor and expander rotors can be machined or ground in a single cutting operation and then separated by machining a parting slot in them on completion of the lobe formation. Moreover, in such a case, by proper location of the machine ports, pressure loads and thereby, mechanical friction losses will be less than if the two functions are performed in separate machines. Fields of application of such machines are replacement of the throttle valve in refrigeration and air conditioning plants, high-pressure application, fuel cells, multistage compression or expansion and, really, any other application where simultaneous compression and expansion are required. One example of such unusual, but convenient application is the compressor capacity control by partial expanding of compressed gas.

Identification of Constraints in the Optimal Generation of Screw Compressor Rotors by the Pressure Angle Method
The profile gradient method has been recently introduced as a means of generating screw compressor rotor profiles. As a single parameter method, this procedure is convenient for the optimisation of screw compressor rotors and evaluating their quality. In this paper, the procedure is modified to adopt the pressure angle instead the profile gradient and applied to a screw compressor rotor rack. O...
متن کاملCFD grid generation and analysis of screw compressor with variable geometry rotors
This paper presents development of an algebraic grid generation algorithm applicable to Finite Volume Method for Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) calculation of variable pitch twin screw machines. It is based on the principles developed for the uniform pitch rotors with constant cross-section profile. The same algorithm could be also used for rotors with variable profile geometry. Performance...
متن کاملOptimisation of Screw Compressors
Increasing demands for more efficient screw compressors require that compressor designs are tailored upon their duty, capacity and manufacturing capability. A suitable procedure for optimisation of the screw compressor shape, size, dimension and operating parameters is described here, which results in the most appropriate design for a given compressor application and fluid. It is based on a rac...
متن کاملRetrofit 'N' Rotors for Efficient Oil-Flooded Screw Compressors
The market for twin screw compressors is highly competitive, especially in compressed air and refrigeration systems, and new designs are continually being introduced which are more efficient and cost effective than their predecessors. However, because of the high cost of development of new machines, manufacturers seek to maintain their existing designs for as long as possible. Closer study of m...
متن کاملInspection of Screw Compressor Rotors for the Prediction of Performance, Reliability, and Noise
The relationship between screw compressor problems and characteristics of the rotors themselves continues to interest designers, even though manufacturing accuracy has been vastly improved over the last decade, largely due to the benefits offered by the Co-ordinate Measuring Machine (CMM). Contrary to some predictions, however, pair inspection has not been eliminated, even though the feeler gau...
